A warm Kegedonce Press welcome to acclaimed Lenape poet, D.A. Lockhart, whose newest poetry collection, Go Down Odawa Way has just been released!
If you know anything about Indigenous poetry in Canada, then it’s a good bet that you have heard of D.A. Lockhart, author of seven previous poetry collections, including Devil in the Woods (Brick Books 2019) and Tukhone: Where the River Narrows and the Shores Bend (Black Moss Press 2020). His work has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry in English 2019, TriQuarterly, ARC Poetry Magazine, Grain, Belt, and the Malahat Review among many. He is a Turtle Clan member of Eelünaapéewi Lahkéewiit (Lenape), a registered member of the Moravian of the Thames First Nation, and currently resides at the south shore of Waawiiyaatanong (Windsor,ON-Detroit, MI) and Pelee Island.
Kegedonce Press is thrilled to publish Go Down Odawa Way, Lockhart’s newest collection. Grounded in the southwestern territories of the Three-Fires Confederacy, Lockhart’s poetic expressions at times heighten, at times negate the contrast between natural and urban landscapes. Beneath the surface-level visions of factories, asphalt and pick-up trucks dwells the immortal spirit of the land, of nature, of wind and water, sky and birds. The glory of sunsets beautify the cracks in the concrete.
Go Down Odawa Way is a poetic journey into the physical, historical and cultural spaces of Waawiiyaatanong (Windsor, ON to Detroit, MI), wherein the poet evokes the land and villages, the history and mythologies of the Ojibway, Huron/Wendat, and Pottawatomi nations. Lockhart poignantly and powerfully captures a history that long predates the mere handful of centuries of European colonization, exposing the ongoing effects of settler culture and its industry, symbolized in the roads, parking lots and freeways that inevitably scar the land.
